Psychoanalytic Referral Service

The Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (SPSI) trains mental health clinicians to provide psychoanalytic treatment, and trains researchers in the application of psychoanalytic theory to various social settings. SPSI serves individuals and organizations in the community through educational outreach, consultation, research, and reduced fee psychoanalytic treatment.
SPSI, a not-for-profit corporation, is governed by a Board of Directors.

Admission Policies for Core Training Program

Clinical psychoanalytic training is offered to three categories of applicants:

Category 1: Complete Program.
This category includes didactics, case conferences, and case supervision. Student pays standard tuition plus fees for their case supervision. Fees for supervision are negotiated with case supervisor. Candidates must have a minimum of 40 hours of individual supervision to qualify for the Certificate in Child Clinical Psychotherapy.

Category 2: Modified Program
This category includes didactics and case conference, but case supervision is not required. Student pays standard tuition. Category 2 candidates will receive a Certificate of Completion of CPP Didactics and Case Conferences

Category 3: Auditor
This category includes didactics and case conferences, but supervision is not required. Student pays standard tuition. This category also allows students who are Fellows of APsaA and a previous guest faculty at SPSI to audit free of charge.

Category 4: Research trained and oriented scholars who may be considered for a waiver of the prerequisites stipulated above in order to pursue psychoanalytic training as a major contribution to their research fields.*

A clinical associate** may expect a term of no less than five years for the completion of clinical psychoanalytic training. Graduates of the core program are eligible to apply for certification in psychoanalysis and active membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association.

Applications for psychoanalytic training are available from the SPSI office and are accepted for consideration throughout the year. A $200 fee is required for application. After the application is received, a series of interviews with the applicant is conducted by the Admissions Committee. Decisions regarding application are made by the Admissions Committee. Current tuition and fee schedules are available from the SPSI office.

It is not automatic for a new class to begin each year. Those accepted for training might wait a year or more before beginning formal class work.

* After approval for training by the SPSI, a request may be made by the SPSI for a waiver to be granted by the Board on Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association.

** Upon beginning formal class work, students are designated as clinical associates
