SPSI serves individuals and organizations in the community through educational outreach, consultation, research, and reduced fee psychoanalytic treatment.
SPSI, a not-for-profit corporation, is governed by a Board of Directors.

Preconference Seminar

“The Hampstead Clinic and The Anna
Freud Centre: A Source of Developmental Theory and Technique — Personal Experiences and Reflections”

We will briefly survey how The
Hampstead Clinic was established by Anna
Freud in 1951 and started developmental
research and training in child psychoanalysis.
The wartime controversial discussions
or disputes between followers of Anna
Freud and Melanie Klein focused the research
and clinical work at the Clinic in fruitful ways
to be described. Graduates of the Clinic,
now called The Anna Freud Centre,
continue this productive legacy, from
Mother to Mentalization.

The InterInstitute Committe Presents The
2010 lecture Featuring

Phyllis Tyson, PhD
"Love and Hate, Mothers and Daughters, and the Challenges of Growing Up Female"

Burgeoning new ideas about female psychology demonstrate that women's psychological development can non longer be considered a "dark continent". Linear models continue to restrict our understanding of the normality or pathology of the multiple dynamic emotional vicissitudes of the mother-daughter relationship. Using clinical examples, Dr. Tyson explores the intense emotions of love and hate that often arise throughout the course of this relationship. Efforts to cope with such passions may lead to enduring maladaptive ways of coping.
