Child Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program Curriculum
Overview
Graduation requires a minimum of 40 hours of approved individual Consultation.
CPPP seminars and case conferences meet Monday evening from 6:30 until 9:35 and focus on child and adolescent developmental theory, technique, psychopathology, and issues and controversies across all age groups. Readings include issues of assessment of children and families, issues of opening phase, middle phase, and termination work with a child and family, transference/countertransference, and working with parents.
First Year
- Introduction to Psychoanalytic Child Psychotherapy
- Psychoanalytic Theories of Child Development I (0 to 7 years)
- Psychoanalytic Theories of Child Development II (7 to 21 years)
- In addition, there is one clinical case seminar each trimester.
Second Year
- Pre-latency - psychopathology, techniques, and developmental issues
- Latency - psychopathology, techniques, and developmental issues
- Adolescent - psychopathology, technique and developmental issues
In addition, there is one clinical case seminar each trimester.
Admissions
The Child Psychotherapy Program is offered to three categories of applicants:
- Complete Program - Includes didactics, case conferences, and case consultation. Student pays standard tuition plus fees for their case consultation. Fees for consultation are negotiated with an approved consulting psychoanalyst. Students must have a minimum of 40 hours of approved individual Consultation to graduate from the Child Psychotherapy Program.
- Modified Program - Includes didactics and case conferences, but case consultation is not required. Student pays standard tuition. Category 2 students graduate upon completion of CPP Didactics and Case Conferences.
- Auditor - Includes didactics and case conferences, but case consultation is not required. Student pays standard tuition. This category also allows students who are Fellows of APsaA and previous guest faculty at SPSI to audit free of charge.
