SPSI Scientific Session: Can a Butterfly be a Boy and a Girl?
Event Start Date: 10/16/2018 7:30 PM
Event End Date: 10/16/2018 9:00 PM

Presenter: Julie Wood, MA, LMFT, LMHC
“Can a Butterfly be a Boy and a Girl? Integrating psychoanalysis and family therapy for a transgender 12 year old”

This presentation will tell the story of a boy child born to a family in which he felt alien to his parents, to his twin, to himself, and to his own body. Born with early developmental and medical complications, including a significant communication disorder, he transitioned to life as a girl in kindergarten. Psychoanalysis began at the dawn of puberty and involved significant family work to create space for otherness within the family.

Julie Wood is a Child and Adult Psychoanalyst and Family Therapist in private practice in Bellevue. A new faculty member at SPSI, she served on the family therapy faculty at Seattle Pacific University for a decade and developed an integrated family therapy program in a pediatric early intervention clinic.

Discussant: John Cardinali, PsyD
"Emerging possibilities: How does transgender experience inform psychoanalysis?"

John Cardinali is a training and consulting analyst at SPSI and a supervising and training analyst at the Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles.  He is in private practice in Seattle and has a longstanding interest in psychoanalytic approaches to non-traditional expressions of gender and sexuality.
